Out of Contract Rates
What happens to my energy at the end of my contract?
Your energy supply won’t switch off immediately, but once your contract ends with us you’ll be officially ‘out of contract’. If you haven’t renewed with us or if you don’t have a new supplier in place by this date, you will be charged what is known as an ‘out of contract’ rate. We don’t want you to be caught off guard, so please make sure you read on to learn more about how it all works.
What’s an out of contract rate?
This is the default rate that covers the continuation of electricity supply to your business address, while you’re in between suppliers. It covers things such as meter charges as well as a standard unit rate of electricity. You should know upfront that an ‘out of contract’ rate is much higher than the RED price you’re used to, because once you’re out of contract you’re no longer being matched with our renewable generators - you’re getting your energy through the wholesale market.
When else would out of contract rates apply?
If you’ve recently changed tenancy or taken on a new business premise there may be an out of contract rate applied to that meter. Don’t leave it too long before you sign a new energy contract. Joining tem. with a RED contract will ensure you’re matched with our network of renewable generators at a fair, affordable price.
Can I get a breakdown of out of contract rates?
Absolutely. If you are on a half-hour meter, you will be charged a unit rate of 29p/KWh applied to each actual or estimated unit of electricity supplied. There are also fixed industry charges that are passed directly through to you, including:
a standing charge, which covers distribution costs of energy and supporting government schemes
a charge for the maintenance of the transmission system of electricity (also known as Transmission Network Use of System)
a capacity charge
other charges that you would have seen in your RED price including The Climate Change Levy, reactive power, excess capacity and meter charges
If you are on a non-half-hour meter, you will be charged a unit rate of 32.68p/KWh applied to each actual or estimated unit of electricity supplied as above. There are a few differences on the fixed industry charges passed directly through to you, including:
a standing charge, which covers distribution costs of energy and supporting government schemes
an additional daily standing charge (£3.54/day) to cover third party distribution charges, metering costs and administration costs;
a charge for the maintenance of the transmission system of electricity (also known as Transmission Network Use of System)
The Climate Change Levy is also passed through to you
And if you’re unsure what meter system you’re on, check your contract or latest invoice.
How can I avoid out of contract rates?
Get a jumpstart on things, well before your contract ends. You can renew with us anytime before your contract end date to avoid paying an ‘out of contract’ rate. When you renew you’ll be matched across our network of renewable generators to unlock a fair and affordable price for your energy, without being hit with wholesale fees. Just ask us how at hello@tem.energy.
